Pledge to Save Energy & Resources

Congratulations! By taking this pledge and committing to simple actions that save energy and natural resources on campus, you will help UNMC reduce utility costs, improve the institution's environmental impact, and establish an overall better place to learn and work.

To take the pledge, complete the two quick steps noted below and then hit the submit button.

Please note that this site is dedicated to UNMC staff, faculty, and students only. If you are an employee of The Nebraska Medical Center, please go to http://intranet.nebraskamed.com/employeeresources/eat/
to complete the pledge.

To help my department and UNMC save energy and natural resources, I personally pledge to do the following on a regular basis: (select your job type to view pledge options)

  • Shut down the computer at the end of EVERY WORKDAY (except for Mondays & Wednesdays per the recommendation of the IT Department)

  • Turn off the lights when enough natural light exists and when leaving an unoccupied room

  • Turn off computer monitors when not in use

  • Turn off computer monitors when not in use and at the end of the day

  • Print double-sided when using the printer or copier (unless single-sided is specifically required)

  • Turn off non-essential equipment when not in use (i.e., equipment that does NOT compromise patient safety)

  • Take the stairs instead of using the elevator

  • Close fume hood sashes when not in use

  • Turn off non-essential lab equipment when not in use

  • Use reusable items while on campus such as mugs, water bottles, lunch containers, utensils, and plates

  • Use reusable items at work such as mugs, water bottles, lunch containers, utensils, and plates

  • Open doors manually rather than using the handicap entrance button (unless necessary)

  • Turn off projectors when not in use

  • Turn off computer monitors when patient rooms are vacant

  • Collect all recyclable items and place them into the appropriate collection receptacles

  • Use cold water when cleaning (unless hot water is specifically required)

  • Reduce unnecessary linen use by following the protocols of the Green Linen program

  • Turn off the lights when leaving unoccupied rooms, coolers, freezers, and storage areas

  • Turn off non-essential kitchen equipment when not in use and at the end of the day

  • Close the lid on braisers when not in use

  • Use and heat only the sections of the charbroiler and griddle that are necessary

  • Encourage colleagues to take this pledge

  • Turn off “non-essential” equipment when not in use (i.e., equipment that does not compromise the safety of employees, volunteers, visitors, wildlife, or protected plants)

  • Recycle paper, plastics (grades 1 – 6), aluminum cans, and “flattened” cardboard boxes by placing the used items in a recycling bin

  • Shut off gas-powered Zoo vehicles when parked or stopped for more than 30 seconds

  • Use a reusable/washable cloth to clean instead of paper towels when applicable

  • Use reusable items at work for personal use, such as mugs, water bottles, lunch containers, utensils, and plates

  • Turn off non-essential kitchen, concession, and/or catering equipment when not in use

  • Open doors manually rather than using the automatic door button (unless necessary)

  • When watering plants ensure that the water is directed toward the correct, natural areas and not falling on hard/concrete surfaces

  • Shut down the computer at the end of every workday

  • During day and evening rounds, turn off indoor lights in unoccupied rooms and outdoor lights that are unnecessary for safety and animal-health reasons

  • Turn off “non-essential” office equipment and appliances when not in use (i.e., printer/copier, coffee maker, etc.)

  • Encourage colleagues to take this pledge
